Ethics & Confidentiality

Creating a safe, respectful, and trustworthy mediation process.

Trust is at the heart of every mediation.

Whether you are seeking support with a workplace dispute, a family disagreement, separation, divorce, or community conflict, you need to know that the process is fair, confidential, and professionally managed.

Everything discussed in mediation stays in mediation, except in very limited circumstances required by law or where there is a risk of serious harm.

As an Accredited Professional Mediator and member of the Mediators' Institute of Ireland, I am bound by the MII Code of Ethics and Practice and the provisions of the Irish Mediation Act 2017. These standards guide every aspect of my work.

My Commitment to You

Confidentiality

Mediation is a confidential process.

This means that information shared during mediation is not disclosed outside the process without permission, except in limited circumstances where disclosure may be required by law or where there is a risk of serious harm. Confidentiality allows participants to speak openly and honestly without fear that their words will be used against them later.

Before mediation begins, all participants will be asked to sign an Agreement to Mediate which includes confidentiality provisions and explains how the process will operate.

Impartiality

I do not take sides.

My role is not to decide who is right or wrong, assign blame, or tell people what they should do. Instead, I support all participants equally and help create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to be heard and understood.

If I believe that I cannot remain impartial in a particular matter, I will not accept the case or will withdraw from the process.

Independence

I act independently at all times.

My responsibility is to the integrity of the mediation process, not to any individual participant, organisation, employer, or family member involved in the dispute.

Voluntary Participation

Mediation is a voluntary process.

Participants remain free to make their own decisions throughout the process. No agreement can be imposed, and any outcome must be reached by the participants themselves.

Respect and Dignity

Every participant deserves to be treated with respect.

I strive to create a mediation environment where people feel safe to express their views, listen to different perspectives, and engage in constructive dialogue, even when the issues being discussed are difficult or emotional.

Professional Standards

As a member of the Mediators' Institute of Ireland, I am committed to ongoing professional development, ethical practice, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.

I only undertake mediation work where I have the appropriate training, knowledge, and competence to do so.

Transparency

Before mediation begins, I will explain:

  • How the mediation process works

  • What confidentiality means and its limits

  • My role as mediator

  • The costs involved

  • The rights and responsibilities of all participants

  • The option to seek independent legal or professional advice where appropriate

I believe people make better decisions when they understand the process fully and know what to expect.

What I Will Not Do

As a mediator, I will not:

  • Take sides

  • Judge who is right or wrong

  • Provide legal advice

  • Force anyone to reach an agreement

  • Guarantee a particular outcome

  • Share confidential information without permission, except where legally required or where there is a risk of serious harm

A Process Built on Trust

People often come to mediation at a difficult point in their lives. They need a process that feels safe, fair, and respectful.

My commitment is to provide a professional, impartial, and confidential environment where people can speak openly, explore solutions, and work towards a constructive way forward.
