Helping families navigate difficult conversations with respect, understanding, and hope.
As a mum of four children, three of whom are now in their twenties, and having experienced divorce and remarriage myself, I understand first-hand how complex family relationships can be.
Families are built on love, history, shared experiences, and deep connections. Yet they can also be the source of some of life's most painful conflicts. When communication breaks down, misunderstandings take hold, or old hurts remain unresolved, family members can find themselves feeling disconnected from the very people who matter most.
Family mediation provides a safe, confidential, and structured environment where family members can have difficult conversations, explore concerns openly, and work towards constructive solutions together.

Family Estrangement
One of the most painful experiences a family can face is estrangement.
Whether it is between a parent and adult child, siblings, extended family members, or within a blended family, estrangement can leave people carrying years of hurt, grief, confusion, and unanswered questions.
Often, the issue that caused the breakdown is not the only issue. Beneath the surface may be long-standing misunderstandings, unmet expectations, communication difficulties, family transitions, differing values, or unresolved hurts that have accumulated over time.
While mediation cannot change the past, it can create an opportunity for family members to better understand one another, have conversations that may have felt impossible, and explore whether a way forward exists.
Sometimes the outcome is reconciliation. Sometimes it is greater understanding and acceptance. In either case, mediation can help people move forward with greater clarity and less emotional burden.
What Is Family Mediation?
Family mediation is a voluntary process where an independent, impartial mediator helps family members discuss issues that may be difficult to resolve on their own.
Unlike counselling or therapy, mediation focuses on communication, understanding, and problem-solving. The mediator does not take sides, determine who is right or wrong, or make decisions on behalf of participants.
Instead, mediation creates a space where each person can be heard and where practical, workable solutions can be explored together.
When Can Family Mediation Help?
Family mediation may be helpful in situations including:
- Parent and adult child relationship difficulties
- Family estrangement and attempts at reconnection
- Communication breakdowns between family members
- Sibling disputes
- Relationship difficulties within blended families
- Disagreements relating to ageing parents or caring responsibilities
- Inheritance and estate-related family tensions
- Disputes involving extended family members
- Ongoing family conflict affecting wellbeing and relationships
- Significant family disagreements following major life changes
Every family is different. Mediation provides a flexible process that can be adapted to the unique circumstances of those involved.
My Approach
Family conflict is rarely about a single disagreement. More often, there are layers of misunderstanding, assumptions, unmet needs, hurt feelings, and communication patterns beneath the surface.
My role is to create a calm, respectful, and supportive environment where people can slow down, feel heard, and begin to understand both their own perspective and that of others.
As an accredited professional mediator and certified CINERGY Conflict Coach, I bring both professional expertise and lived experience to this work. Having navigated family transitions and relationship changes myself, I understand how challenging these situations can be and the courage it takes to engage in meaningful conversations.
I believe that even when agreement is not immediately possible, understanding is often the first step towards healing and positive change.
The Mediation Process
1. Initial Consultation
An initial confidential conversation to understand the issues, explain the mediation process, and determine whether mediation is appropriate.
2. Individual Meetings
Private meetings with each participant to discuss concerns, understand perspectives, and prepare for the mediation process.
3. Joint Mediation Session(s)
A structured conversation where participants explore the issues, improve understanding, and work towards practical solutions.
Some family matters can be resolved in a single mediation session. Others may require additional sessions, particularly where relationships have been strained for a long period or where multiple issues need to be addressed.
4. Agreement and Next Steps
Where appropriate, participants may identify agreed actions, commitments, or arrangements that support healthier communication and stronger relationships going forward.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is fundamental to family mediation.
Participants need to feel safe to speak openly and honestly. Information discussed during mediation remains confidential except where disclosure is required by law or where there is a risk of harm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all parties have to agree to mediation?
Yes. Mediation is a voluntary process and works best when everyone participates willingly.
Will the mediator take sides?
No. The mediator remains impartial throughout the process and does not make decisions or judgments.
Can mediation help if we have not spoken for a long time?
Often, yes. Mediation can provide a structured and supported environment for conversations that may otherwise feel impossible to begin.
Does mediation always lead to reconciliation?
Not always. While some families rebuild relationships through mediation, others gain greater understanding, closure, or improved communication. Success is not defined solely by reconciliation but by helping people move forward constructively.
